I have a photo of the same painted hill at the John Day Fossil Beds, taken while I was in the area with my son and some of his friends to watch the August 2017 solar eclipse. Wonder if we unknowingly crossed paths with you and your son!
Good Morning Margie, my son and I only made into the Sheep Rock unit on that trip, and got a brief look around (Cathedral Rock) before we had to head back. Quite an adventure though, except for the traffic on the way home, after the eclipse :)
We got to the Sheep Rock unit as well, also enjoyed Mitchell and Rte 26 along the beautiful John Day River. Found a nice uncrowded campsite at Bull Prairie in Umatilla NF. I have lovely memories of that excursion (except for the traffic, of course).
