Carey’s balsamroot in bloom just south of Anatone, WA
On the road, past Anatone (pop. 38)
As a general practice, I don’t write down things I’m reluctant to admit. But until yesterday it was weirdly true that I hadn’t been south of Pullman in decades. I don’t mean Walla Walla, or Pasco, but Lewiston/Clarkston and Asotin, down along the edge with Idaho, toward the very, very remote southeast corner of Washington.
If you go further south than Asotin, you climb a steep grade well above the Snake River, past the stunning slope where the Asotin cemetery resides, with a surreal view of the Snake canyon below. It’s just a terrific place to be buried, in my book, if and when it comes to that sort of thing.
